Product overview
Review the gear pair, assembly conditions, drawing requirements, specification checks, and inspection points before requesting a quotation.
Custom screw gears, commonly referred to as crossed helical gears, are helical gears that mesh on non-parallel, non-intersecting (skew) shafts, most frequently oriented at 90 degrees. Unlike spur or parallel helical gears where tooth contact is a line, crossed helical gears engage with theoretical point contact, resulting in significant sliding velocity along the tooth flanks. ZhongYi manufactures custom screw gears from technical drawings, CAD data, or physical samples. The design and manufacturing review focuses on shaft angle (Σ), center distance, normal module (Mn), helix angles and hands for both gears (e.g., both same hand for 90° shaft angle), face width, bore and keyway configurations, dissimilar material pairings, surface finish, and lubrication requirements.
Selection guidance
Use application and mating-component data to confirm geometry, materials, mounting details, and the acceptance plan.
Confirm the required shaft angle (Σ) and shaft rotation direction. For a 90° crossed-axis setup with identical 45° helix angles, both mating gears must have the same helix hand (both RH or both LH). Because tooth contact is point contact with continuous sliding, calculate transmitted torque conservatively to avoid excessive flank wear. Pairing dissimilar materials—such as a hardened steel driver with a phosphor bronze or engineering plastic driven gear—improves sliding wear life and reduces galling risk under oil or grease lubrication.

Quality Control & Inspection Matrix
Overseas procurement teams require verifiable technical data, not unsupported claims. Every production batch at ZhongYi is inspected against approved CAD blueprints and international standards (DIN, AGMA, ISO).
Component-Specific Quality Focus:
Screw gear quality requires careful verification of helix angles, tooth surface roughness, and center distance compatibility. Inspection reports confirm bore tolerances, keyway positions, normal tooth thickness (over-pin dimension), and surface condition. ZhongYi reviews lubrication assumptions and operating loads with the customer to ensure reliable component manufacturing.
Validates 3D spatial GD&T, bore concentricity, center distance, and geometric tolerances down to ±0.002 mm.
Inspects involute tooth profile error (fα), lead crowning (fβ), pitch cumulative error (Fp), and radial runout (Fr).
Verifies surface hardness (58–62 HRC), core toughness, and effective carburized / nitrided case depth gradient.
100% chemical composition verification of alloy steel forgings (20CrMnTi, 42CrMo, 18CrNiMo7-6, Stainless, POM).
We maintain strict incoming material spectroscopy, in-process CNC tooth coordinate monitoring, and 100% final pre-shipment dimensional inspection. All custom gear batches are backed by our full manufacturing warranty.

Discover how this gear category meets extreme torque, low backlash, quiet operation, and weather-resistance demands in primary industry sectors:
High-torque, impact-resistant gears, girth rings, and planetary drive sets engineered for excavators, cranes, drilling rigs, and heavy mining crushers.
Low-backlash, ultra-precise fine-pitch gears, ground helical racks, and planetary gearheads for robotics, AGV wheel drives, and high-speed motion axes.
High-torque bevel gears, spur gears, and splined drive shafts for tractors, harvesters, rotary tillers, and agricultural PTO gearboxes.
Technical FAQ
Critical specifications are confirmed against final drawings before production.
When shafts cross at 90° and both gears have 45° helix angles, both gears must have the SAME hand (both right-hand or both left-hand). This differs from parallel-shaft helical gears, which require OPPOSITE hands.
Crossed helical teeth make point contact rather than line contact, causing high localized contact stress and significant sliding velocity. For heavy torque transmission at 90°, a worm gear set or hypoid/spiral bevel set is recommended.
High-viscosity gear oils with EP (extreme pressure) additives or synthetic greases containing anti-wear agents are recommended to maintain an effective lubricating film during sliding contact.
